Okay, now where was I? Ahhh yes, I had just had a whirlwind down riding around the island on the quad bikes. I will have to say that was probably one of the most fun and exciting days and excursions I did on my solo travels. Just being able to cruise around on that bike with the wind blowing in your hair while taking in gorgeous scenery...it was all so surreal! I mean I'm in Greece, far far away from Texas, and riding around on these bikes with some cool people I've met along the way!
Next day was pretty relaxed again, hey that is the point of vacation after all, you can't stay busy doing sight seeing and tourist stuff 100% of the time! I think the 3 girls from New York went horse back riding the day we went out on the 4-wheelers. But that didn't turn out so great. The next day I was surfing the web in the lobby and one of the girls walks in with a neck brace on! Holy cow, what the hell happened to you? Turns out one of the horses bucked her off and she hurt her neck pretty good, even had to get stitches. I got the full story from one of the other girls and it sounded like quite the fiasco. Running to and from the hospital, insurance stuff, etc. Thank goodness a couple of the girls were RN's and knew what was going on.
The rest of the day consisted of either laying in my room with the air conditioner blowing at full blast, or sitting around the pool mingling with folks and sipping on some cocktails Speaking of cocktails, the pool bar had a neon sign that had a mind of it's own!
Often times you would glance up at the sign and rather than it flashing back and forth between "cock" and "tails" it just stayed lit up on the word pictured above. That did call for a good laugh. Later that evening we decided to do a little pre-drinking in the courtyard again and then head over to a local pub called Atlas that had an awesome bartender (as well as food, I would later find out), that played classic rock hits all night long!
After Atlas and we walked over to another bar, the name escapes me at the moment, and it happened to be Karaoke night! Now I will have to admit that I've never sang karaoke before! I'm not the shy type so I'm surprised myself but I decided tonight should be the night this gets tossed out the window. My buddy Matt, myself, and 2 other folks decided to sing the hardest song known to man to break me in....Queen's "Bohemian Rhapsody." Mamma Mia is right, we failed miserably at the end with an embarrassing accuracy score but I wouldn't take it back for the world! I'll always remember my first karaoke experience as being in one of the most beautiful places on earth in Santorini, Greece!
Above are pictures of friends that were all staying at Annie's Sutdios.
My trip was starting to come to an end and I just wasn't quite ready to head back to Paris and then back to the US. My friend Matt had been planning to head to Istanbul, Turkey after Santorini and I started quizzing him about where he was staying and for how long, etc. Everyone that I had come in contact with that had already been to Istanbul just raved about how fun and fantastic it was. Since I still had a little moolah in the pocket book I just decided on a whim to go ahead and book a flight to Turkey! I didn't want to go alone as I had heard it might be a bit scary as a girl travelling by herself. I have been travelling by myself the last 5 months and had never felt scared or threatened, but since Matt was already going it worked out perfectly. And being as close as I was I would have been an idiot not to go ahead and check out the city everyone was raving about!
My last day I had some lunch with a few friends I had made and took some pictures of the black sand beaches of Perissa. My friend John from Melbourne, Australia ordered a whole fish from the restaurant we ate at and it was the funniest dish....
Look at the teeth on that thing! If I didn't know better I woulda thought it was a piranha!
Most of the restaurants across the street from the beach had their own lawn chairs and cabanas that their customers could sit in for free. I never laid out on the beach because the weather was still a bit cool when I was there in early May. Plus the water was quite frigid itself!
So thus ends my whimsical trip on the island of Santorini. I bought a flight from Santorini to Istanbul with 1 layover in Athens. It was cheaper to do it this way rather than paying for a ferry back to Athens which would have be around 40 Euro, and to be honest that was about how much more the flight was out of Santorini than in Athens. Join me for my last stop in Istanbul....
